Choosing a Fig Tree for Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara's coastal and inland microclimates can provide different growing conditions for fig trees, so variety, planting location, and available space are all worth considering when choosing a tree.

Consider these factors when choosing your fig tree:

  • Your location: Figs generally perform best with plenty of sun and well-drained soil. In cooler coastal locations, a warm, sunny planting spot can be especially helpful for fruit ripening.
  • Coastal and inland conditions: UC guidance for Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties includes Osborn Prolific and White Genoa among its coastal selections, while Black Mission, Brown Turkey, and Kadota are included among its inland selections. These recommendations aren't an exhaustive list, and individual garden conditions can vary.
  • Available space: Fig trees can become substantial plants, so consider the space available as the tree matures. Your planting area can help determine which variety and tree size make the most sense.
  • Fruit preferences: Fig varieties offer different fruit colors, flavors, textures, and uses. Think about whether you're primarily interested in fresh eating, drying, or simply trying a variety you don't commonly find in stores.
  • Pollination: Many commonly grown home-garden figs are common-type figs that don't require another fig tree for pollination. Pollination requirements can vary by fig type, so it's still worth checking the needs of the particular variety you're considering.
